A large crowd gathered at Fr O'Brien Park on a cold but thankfully dry St Stephen's Day, to watch the 2008 final of the Martin Gallagher Cup between a St Vincent's side from Bunnacurry, Cashel and Saula and a mixed Achill Sound/Tonragee team.
St Vincent's began brightly, and with greater possession in the first quarter came a screaming 30 yard shot from James Kilbane which curved through a mass of Achill Sound defenders to nearly burst the net.
For the first half hour St Vincent's appeared to have most of the game however Achill Sound managed to claw their way back and looked as if they might get an equaliser before the break. However their attacking advantage seemed to constantly fall down on their inability to break the linesman's offside flag.
Early into the second half, John Paul Corrigan saw home an in flighted corner to increase the lead for St Vincent's and effectively end Achill Sounds hard work in trying to get something from the match.
A Kevin Kilbane penalty plus two lates goals from Colin Kilbane and Colm English rounded off a convincing 5-0 victory.
