Achill Rovers is pleased to announce that it has registered with the recently launched John Giles Foundation and plans to participate along with hundreds of other football clubs in the "Walk of Dreams" Event. This national event to be held on the 27th March at 3pm, brings together the Irish football community in a sponsored walk organised throughout 14 towns in Ireland. The Mayo event will be held in Castlebar .
Achill Rovers will walk under it's own banner along with all the other football clubs in Mayo on the route from Mayo League headquarters in Milebush to the Mall in Castlebar and returning back Milebush.
The Mayo walk will be supported by celebraties as well as Republic of Ireland Internationals both past and present ( some taking time out of international duties that weekend ). The Mayo event will culminate in a festival of activities as well as free refreshments for participants back in Milebush Park.
The John Giles Foundation is a national fundraising charity created by Republic of Ireland legend Johnny Giles with support from the FAI . Proceeds from John's new autobiography " A Football Man" are being donated to the foundation.
The Foundation aims to give children an opportunity and focus with the help of football and also aspires to build community cohesion along with promoting health and fitness. It intends to financially support local community programmes and to invest directly in the improvement of football clubs at grassroots level.
The “Walk of Dreams” is the first such national fundraising campaign organised. We will be encouraging our supporters to take part in this event and if possible to help raise sponsorship money for both the John Giles Foundation and Achill Rovers
Half the proceeds raised by Achill Rovers will be kept directly by the club, and by participating we will become eligible to apply for grants which the Foundation will make available after May1st.
The main aim of the "Walk of Dreams" is to
show the football community coming together, raising awareness of the strength of the grassroots game to future sponsors of the foundation.
The amount of money raised by participants is not important. What is important is that as many friends and families connected with Achill Rovers show their support by attending the walk.
As alphabetically the first club in Mayo, Achill Rovers will be in pole position just behind celebraties and dignatories. This is a great chance for us to show our support of this worthy cause, which in turn will help us in any future application to the John Giles Foundation.
