Achill Rovers Squad of 1998

Patrick Francis Gallagher - Currane - Has given 110% commitment to Achill Rovers since becoming a manager in 1993.

Patrick English - Cashel - Assistant Manager. Has been involved with Achill Football from the begining and has managed sides at all levels.

Cormac Holland - Achill Sound - Goalkeeper (23)- Performed well when called upon during the season

Damien Heaney - Pollagh - Goalkeeper (25) - Kept clean sheets in all appearances

Paul Mullen - Dooega - Goalkeeper (17) - Was the then Mayo Youth Keeper

Colm Gallagher - Dooniver - Goalkeeper (18) - Former Mayo youth keeper recognised as one of the top keepers in Mayo.

J.P. Keane - Keel - Full Back (19) - 1998 was his third season in the Achill Junior side. Former Mayo Youth player.

Fintan Connaghan - Pollagh - Full Back (17) - Pacy defender a regular in the Rovers & Mayo Youth sides throughout the season.

Des Murphy - Saula - Full Back (25) - Hard tackler who had an excellent season.

Patrick McGinty - Saula - Full Back (22) - Versatile defender could could also play in the centre of the pitch.

Sean Gallagher - Currane - Full Back (25) - Strong fast and determined.

Daniel Fadian - Bunnacurry - Centre Back (24) - Strong in the air and lethal at set pieces.

Mark Corrigan - Achill Sound - Centre Back (22) - Tremendous skill and ability on the ball. Represented Mayo at all levels. Premier League Player of the Year 1998.

Michael John Fadian - Dooagh - Centre Back (18) - Captained Connaught U17s in 1997 was badly affected by injury during the 98 season. Considered the best defender in Mayo at the time.

Brian McNulty - Bunnacurry - Defender (35) - Classy defender & one of Achill Rovers greatest players. Scorer of Achill Rovers first ever goal.

Philip McNulty - Bunnacurry - Defender (27) - No nonsense defender who never let the side down when called upon.

Shane McClafferty - Saula - Defender (17) - Played previous season for Mayo U16. Strong defensive player who could also slot in up front.

Vincent Gallagher - The Valley - Midfield (21) - Sucessfully moved from fullback position and regulary represented Mayo.

Raymond McNamara - Dugort - Midfield (22) - Versatile player able to fill any position including keeper. Scored important goals.

Martin McGing - Dugort - Midfield (28) - Great crosser of the ball and scorer of some fine goals. At the time with over ten years service to the club he was nicknamed "Giggsy".

Declan O'Malley - Currane - Midfield (22) - Late arrival to the game. Tough tackler who never gave up.

Noel Cooney - Keel - Midfield (33) - long time servant of Achill Rovers and Mayo. Premier League Player of the year in 1997 ( and 2002 ).

Kevin Fallon - Polranny - Midfield (20) - Very skilful player who was new to the team that season. Performed well in all appearances.

Michael Scanlon - Springvale - Midfield (24) - Scored important goals on the way to the title.

Fergal Kilbane - Achill Sound - Forward (21) - Former Republic of Ireland U15 International. Had great skill and pace and was back to his best during the season.

Alan English - Cashel - Forward (26) - At 6'5" he was commanding in the air. When supplied he could match any defender.

Michael Denis McNamara - Dugort - Forward (16) - Newcomer to the team, he scored a hatrick on his debut against Manulla and held on to his place in the side throughout the rest of the season.

Ciaran Gallagher - River - Forward (19) - Played for Mayo at all levels.

Niall O'Donnell - Dooagh - Forward (20) - Strong & fast. Unlucky with injuries throughout the season.

Colm Reilly - Mulranny - Forward (17) - Came to the team late in the season but performed well.

Season Statistics

Achill Rovers won the Mayo Premier League title of 1998 with a total of 35 points ( 9 wins 8 draws and only a single defeat ). With a goal difference of +25, they scored a total of 46 goals in 18 matches ( highest in the division ) and conceded only 21 ( lowest inthe divison ).

Top scorers for Achill Rovers that season were; Ciaran Gallagher 7, Alan English 7, Ray McNamarra 7, Fergal Kilbane 6.
